Quarterly Survey Success Story Example
Here is an example of a success story submitted by Henrico Mental Health & Developmental Services.
Henrico Opiate Jail Diversion
The Henrico Opiate Jail Diversion program began in May 2018. It is a collaborative effort between Henrico Mental Health & Developmental Services, Henrico Sheriff’s Office, Henrico Commonwealth Attorney, Henrico Community Corrections and our judges. The goal is to provide treatment to those with an opiate use disorder who are held in jail without bond until trial. Treatment includes Vivitrol injections, case coordination, group and individual therapy, random weekly drug testing, peers support and extensive collaboration with all stakeholders. As long as the individual follows the rules of their release plan “treatment plan,” they remain in the community until their trail. The program was funded initially through the OPTR grant and has more recently been funded via the SOR grant award from DBHDS. To date 18 people have been diverted utilizing this program. 7 have graduated from the program. At the time of graduation, all of the graduates were abstinent, employed, had stable housing, had been linked to medical care and were reunited with their families. 4 of the 18 were not successful in the program and began to use again despite the intensive supports. Currently there are 7 people enrolled in the program. Here is what some of our current participants say…..
Denine:
“Upon coming to the Opiate Diversion , I had no hope and I was so broken. After attending so many other treatment facilities, in patient and out, I could not commit myself to staying clean. I wanted to, but the disease help me prisoner in my own body and mind. I told myself that addiction was my fate and I was going to die that way. Then I was introduced to the opiate diversion along with mental health and life started having meaning and I wasn’t scared anymore. The support, counselors and peer specialists helped me to put in order the things I’m learning in the program along with my medications so that I could feel a sense of purpose again. Today I’m grateful for my higher power and Henrico Mental Health for my sanity and also my sobriety.”
Donte:
“The opiate diversion program has literally saved my life. Throughout the past five years, my life has been out of control. I’ve lost homes, vehicles, family and friends due to m drug use. I’ve done things completely out of character from the way I was raised. I’ve lied, stolen, disrespected, and just gave up everything but the drug.”
“The people who work for the program are special and dedicated. They make sure we are doing good with our lives, that we keep up our commitments and hold us responsible for our actions. They’re always able to answer or help figure out any problems we may have. It really is a great feeling knowing that they’re in my corner….”
“The schedule is very easy to follow as long as your committed to change….My family is proud of me again, my kids are proud to go out with their father again, my mother is estatic to see the son she raised again.”
